BioIndustry 4.0

Although industry as a whole is evolving towards digitalisation through what is called the 4.0 industrial revolution, uptake in biomanufacturing is insufficient for several reasons. On one hand, bioprocesses are complex and more difficult to model than mechanical systems. On the other hand, biomanufacturing is an emerging area that is considered financially risky. Finally, processes that are currently operational often result from recent capital investment, which generates a lock-in phenomenon.

Industry 4.0 features big data, artificial intelligence (AI), simulation, system integration, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Therefore, the aim of BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 is harnessing some of these technologies to devise new services for industrial biotechnology. Moreover, in an overarching manner, BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 aims to provide the basis for a demonstration platform, reveraling how industry 4.0 can improve performance and add value to the biomanufacturing sector.
